01 / TAKING FISH HOME

Your export allowance.

The allowance limits fish and fish products you take out of Norway. It is separate from the rules for what you may catch or keep.

FROM 1 JANUARY 2027

10 kg

Per eligible person, on each of up to two occasions per calendar year.

  • You must be aged 12 or older and have fished through a registered tourist fishing business.
  • Travel with your own individual export document. The named angler must be present; group paperwork is not accepted.
  • There is no additional allowance for a trophy fish.

Official source: Fiskeridirektoratet — export quota.

Document requirements: Norwegian Customs. Confirm the registered business and paperwork arrangements before relying on an export allowance.

02 / MEASURE BEFORE YOU KEEP

These are recreational minimum lengths for the northern area. A legal size does not override a closed season, protected species or local restriction.

Baselines are official reference lines, not simply the nearest shoreline. Confirm which zone you are fishing in before choosing the cod or redfish limit.

Measure from the snout tip to the outermost tail-fin tip. Release viable undersized fish carefully; change location or tackle if you keep catching small fish.

03 / KNOW WHEN TO LEAVE THEM

Closed seasons
& protected species.

Check the species, date, gear and fishing area together. The main seasonal restrictions below apply north of 62° N.

Atlantic halibut

No targeted fishing: 20 December–20 April, both dates included. Release viable accidental catches during this period.

Halibut over 2 metres must be returned to the sea even if dead or dying. For fish without a head, the threshold is over 160 cm.

Official source: Fiskeridirektoratet — halibut rules (Norwegian).

Redfish

The targeted-fishing exception is 1 June–31 August for boats under 15 m using permitted jigging tackle (juksa). Foreign tourists remain limited to handheld tackle.

Outside this window, do not target redfish.

Official source: Fiskeridirektoratet — protected species (Norwegian).

Species to leave alone

Do not target spiny dogfish, basking shark, porbeagle, silky shark, blue ling or European eel. Recreational lumpfish fishing is prohibited in Finnmark.

Tourists must also respect the restrictions on lobster, wrasse and bluefin tuna. This is a selected overview; consult the full tourist-fishing guidance and protected-species rules.

04 / A RESPONSIBLE FISHING WEEK

Tackle, distance
& catch reporting.

A few practical checks make each day easier. Confirm the reporting process and local fishing area during your arrival briefing.

Which tackle can a visiting angler use?

Foreign tourists may use handheld rods or handlines. Nets, pots, traps and longlines are not permitted. You may not sell your catch.

Official source: Fiskeridirektoratet — tourist-fishing rules.

How far should I stay from fish farms?

Keep more than 100 m away while fishing. Boat traffic must remain at least 20 m from installations and their moorings. Check local protected zones before heading out.

Official source: Fiskeridirektoratet — fish-farm distances (Norwegian).

Which catches need to be reported?

Registered tourist fishing businesses report daily. Follow the camp’s process after each trip for cod, halibut, redfish, wolffish and saithe, including released fish and trips without a catch.

Catch reporting must be completed before export documents can be issued.

05 / GETTING HERE IN WINTER

Check the road.
Leave room in your plans.

Snow and wind can affect the final part of the journey. Check the entire route before setting off and again before the exposed coastal section.

The wake of a boat leads between snow-covered rocky shores beneath a cloudy sky.

The Havøysund approach

If convoy driving is in force

Read the current meeting points, departure information and instructions from Statens vegvesen. Follow road signs and the convoy crew; do not enter a closed road.

06 / BEFORE LEAVING THE HARBOUR

Make a plan
for the water.

Use the boat handover and briefing to confirm the area, conditions, safety equipment, communications and your return plan.

  • Check wind direction, gusts, wave conditions and warnings for your actual route. The town forecast alone does not describe the offshore fishing grounds.
  • Read tide times and predicted water levels. A tide table does not establish when local currents are safe.
  • Wear suitable flotation equipment, know how to use the radio, and make sure someone ashore knows your plan.
